Hi, I’m laura

Owner/founder of elem photography

this is the story of my photography journey and a little more about my personal life.

my love for photography started way back between the ages of 10-12 when my parents bought me my first digital camera for my birthday - a hot pink olympus fe-4000! the amount of photos i took on that camera is probably higher than the amount of professional photos i’ve taken…which is a lot or it’s at least on par! my passion for taking photos stemmed from that moment and now here i am today, running my own business doing what i love. i was always (and still am) the one family member who took all the photos when we went on holiday, the one who captured every special occasion and all the little moments in between. i was the one friend who always had their camera in hand at every birthday party because capturing those moments was so important to me. Photos are our only way to go back in time and relive a small or large moment in life that meant enough to want to have it captured and remembered forever.

fast forward to 2014 - the year i saved up my own money and bought my first dslr (also the year i got with my now husband), a canon 700d - this camera was my everything (sorry hubby)! a whole new world opened when i bought it and my love for photography grew stronger by the day. i’ll admit, i took photos of the most random things but it sparked so much joy in me. this camera’s life ended in 2018 when i put it on my tripod at the beach to take some photos of my fiance at the time (now husband) and dog until the tide came in a little too close and knocked it over, to say i was devastated would be an understatement but thankfully i was able to recover my photos! i saved up again and bought myself a canon 80d, wow this thing was so much better than the 700d, it had wi-fi so you could connect your phone and a touch-screen lcd! i thought this camera was the Bees knees! i bought different lenses for this camera but i only kept it for a year or so because i was ready to invest in one of the big guys, i went for the canon 6d mark ii, a full frame camera which is what i still use today. photographing people is what brought me the most amount of joy so that’s what focused on. i practiced on close family and friends and did so much research to teach myself so i could become the best photographer i could be! Yes, that means i am completely self-taught!

in september 2018, i married my best friend surrounded by our family and friends at the beautiful hyde park in perth. in march 2019, my husband and i became pregnant with our first baby and in december we welcomed our beautiful baby girl. my passion for photography got pushed to the side for a little, while i focussed on being a new mum. once our little girl was 9 months, i decided to get back into it, i made the decision to start a business and take on clients and in november of 2020, elem photography was born. 2 months after i established my business, i got 2 lines on a pregnancy test… hello baby number 2! in september 2021, we welcomed our beautiful little boy so once again, i had to put my business on hold. in january of 2022 i started taking bookings again AND MY BUSINESS WAS THRIVING, I ADORED MEETING SO MANY FAMILIES AND CAPTURING THEIR JOURNEYS! FAST FORWARD TO OCTOBER 2023, WE WELCOMED OUR THIRD AND FINAL BABY, A PRECIOUS LITTLE GIRL, SO YOU GUESSED IT, I WENT ON LEAVE AGAIN BUT FOR A MUCH SHORTER PERIOD THIS TIME. IN JANUARY 2024, I OPENED UP MY BOOKS AGAIN and here we are today! i feel extremely lucky to be able to call this my job, my favourite part of photographing families is being able to capture such a special moment in someone elses life - that alone is the biggest privilege.
